Anyone keep bees? I would like to start a few hives on the back of my property to encourage polination and help increase the dwindling bee population.

Any ideas?

anyone around here do it?

Look into local laws/regulations. There is much more to it than you might think. We wanted to do this, but you have to have hives certain distances from neighbors, schools and the like. You also must have your hives inspected as well turns out. We are unable to keep bees becuase of some of these restrictions. It is a costly start-up, wouldn't want you to get too involved if you can't keep 'em

When I go for my walk up the street there is a house with some white box beehives in the back. So I had assumed it was ok to have here. We are allowed 5 cows in the city limits, no limit on goats or sheep. It is a former AG comunity so i am pretty sure it is fine. I will try to research the ordinances first. Anyone here doing it?

I took a bee keeping course last year, the bee keepoers in Austria are egar that more younger people start keeping bees, that the two courses, running over four days only cost 50 Euro. There is also funding by the EU for new european bee keepers.

It's kind of expensive to start out though, see if you can find a bee keeping club near by. That way you can gain experience and help from other bee keepers and also buy useable secondhand suplies. You can also borrow certain equipment like spinners.

I'm going to start next year, unless I can get my hands on a couple of hives and swarms this year.

just checked my ordinances, and the term bees and beekeeping is listed under animal husbandry and agriculture. After reading said terms, My zoning for my district is allowed both. So looks good!

If you want lots of good information from experienced beekeepers, go to beesource.com -- just not today because the site may be down for upgrades. But they have plans for building everything you need, information on local sources for bees, answers to all kinds of questions, and even a forum dedicated for folks who are starting out with their first hive. If you haven't been to their site, it is worth the visit.
