I have learned a lot from this group, just by browsing and never felt like I had the time to join. But - retirement has arrived, and so it's time to get on board.
My husband and I live in Michigan - kind of in the center of the state. We first got chickens in 2001, buying 6 from the small local feed store in Ortonville (east side). Two of the six were roosters, but being empty-nesters ourselves - for just us, we had plenty of eggs for us and the cats. My husband built a 'tractor', and it worked beautifully - as we could keep them safe and let them free range for much of the day (we had no coop or barn). Being in the auto industry, my husband was relocated back to the west side 2 yrs later. We gave the chickens away, as the new owners had just donated THEIR retired hens to an assisted living facility so the residents could enjoy watching them scratch and peck about the facility property. (If I ever wind up in such a facility ... I would want to watch chickens).
Now we live - easiest to say - south of Lansing. We have a large Amish community, and I love being near that. Right now we have 5 red sex links, 2 GL Wyandottes and 1 heinz 57 roo. We got the roo from a friend near Hillsdale, and he's a pretty good boy.
I love the 'forced' routine they give me. I have named them all, and they each have their own personality - which intrigues me. So many people think chickens are dumb. I can't agree with that. On the same token, I have learned to let go, when the unfortunate happens. I've saved 3 hens so far, from intestinal issues - sour and blocked crop - and it's worth the effort to at least try. But - we can only do what we can do. I've learned to live with that.
We're big on organic gardening and canning. In todays world, it's the responsible thing to do in our view.
So ... that's me.
I would love to know who in Michigan, are here. I've tried to find the 'where am I - where are you' section on this site. Have yet to find it. We just had 9 chicks hatch, and I know I'll be looking for homes for the roos.
