Hi & Happy New Yr! We (my wife & I) are from El Paso/Chaparral area, living in Chaparral! Through a friend, I visited the BYC site a couple times in the past (just thought it was time to finally sign up) and have had our chickens (4 or 5, at least one is leghorn) around two years now. I say 4 or 5 chickens as there is a feral one that has been coming arnd/flying into our property for the past couple weeks now (since noticing it) - type don't know/recognize.
My favorite aspects about the chickens is that they often turn out to be good entertainment (w/my gaining truly firsthand knowledge of the word "chicken", cause they really are chickens a lot of times!!).
But, hmmm-- they don't seem to be helping me on the mowing aspect so much as I still have a lot of weeds to deal with.
Hope they take care of them nasty squash bugs in the summer, but thus far, I doubt it. We also have them for the eggs and the composting/fertilizer. Since they wander around the yard a lot now, they have sure been laying a gob of eggs in fenagled nests here and there, including in the pen.

Our two cats and small dog don't seem to tend them any mind.

Anyways, good to finally join!

You can try "training" your chickens to lay eggs in the nest boxes by placing some fake eggs or golf balls in the nests, and locking them inside the coop for several days, maybe a week. Then it should seem like the best option is to just lay in the nest boxes and soon it will become a habit, usually that's done for pullets at POL. But if they've been laying in the yard for 2 years already, they might be set in their ways.

Glad you joined and good luck with your flock!

Thank you for the input, FlappyFeathers! We'll look into the nestboxes training. They have only been wandering the yard off-and-on maybe since end of summer now. I've kept them in due to the wild dogs/varmints/animal situation around here (didn't know how our cats would deal with them too) but all seems to have been going pretty well thus far.

Welcome to backyard chickens I'm so glad you joined the flock! You can ask questions and I will try to respond and you can ask people to sex your chickens and welcome people to backyard chickens and write articles write on peoples profile pages. Hope you enjoy this site as much as we all do.:frow
