Great, it's worth a shot! I don't know what you use for nesting material, but some chickens are particular about arranging their area, and some don't like shavings. You could try picking some of the grass or leaves where they've been laying and put it in the boxes to help them understand. I use these awesome nest pads from amazon that last about 6 mos or so, I shake out occasionally and finally throw in the compost when soiled or falling apart. Never had a broken egg like when I used shavings once. (did that totally sound like an infomercial? sorry!) I just like my system.Thank you for the input, FlappyFeathers! We'll look into the nestboxes training. They have only been wandering the yard off-and-on maybe since end of summer now. I've kept them in due to the wild dogs/varmints/animal situation around here (didn't know how our cats would deal with them too) but all seems to have been going pretty well thus far.
