Great, it's worth a shot! I don't know what you use for nesting material, but some chickens are particular about arranging their area, and some don't like shavings. You could try picking some of the grass or leaves where they've been laying and put it in the boxes to help them understand. I use these awesome nest pads from amazon that last about 6 mos or so, I shake out occasionally and finally throw in the compost when soiled or falling apart. Never had a broken egg like when I used shavings once. (did that totally sound like an infomercial? sorry!) I just like my system. :rolleyes:

I like to free range my birds too... I think it's good for them to be on the grass. Unfortunately there's always some risk involved, so mine are only out when I can keep any eye out for pesky dangers. I just saw a hawk yesterday, perched on my fence... but not for long!
