We live in a heavy forested area with a meadow where the chickens are securely housed with top fenced yard (2" chicken wire for less now load & easy to hit inside to drop snow thru) & hot wired. Daily we have an assortment of ground predators all up to bear & sky predators all the up to the wonderful large birds of prey. There are also large flocks of crows, ravens, etc. that take turns with the birds of prey; they are both present daily.
We never feed anything wild, as it just brings problems for them & us, we leave the delicate balance of nature alone, even if we're tempted to help out. So, a very brave rooster, fenced chicken roof & items in the field for the chickens to take cover with are the safest options. Love the pallet A-frame idea above. Best wishes to all.
