do i feed chickens layers mash/pellets every feed or layers & mixed corn now & again
cheers

As far as I know (and I'm a newbie too!) corn is just for a treat. I think I read that its harder to digest and doesn't have all of the nutrients they need. So give layer feed daily and corn now and again :)

A little more information will be needed to give you the best answers for your flock.

How old are your birds and what genders? If they are not of an age or gender to be actively laying, then layer ration would not be the best choice.

Either way - the staple diet (be it grower, layer, etc) is what you feed as their primary source of feed. I free feed, so this feed is in my feeders 24/7 - I choose to feed a grower from day one to the last day of their life in our flock.
The other stuff - such as scratch, corn, etc - is fed separate as a "treat" and is given only occasionally. I do not mix anything into my staple diet.

Agway & Southern States (to name a few) have 21% layer feed that can be fed with up to 50% scratch grains. You would want it to be a mixed scratch, not just corn and about 9% protein. That is what the feed is designed for, but in that case you would have a feeder of scratch & a feeder of pellets. I find it easier to just feed a higher protein feed & throw their scratch in every afternoon for them to scratch & have fun!
