Beginner breeds

depends a lot on what you want from your chickens. i started with red sex links-great egg production and mostly quiet, but not overly friendly .

Barred rocks. They’re easy to gender. They’re docile and curious little birds. They lay good eggs too. Overall they have really good temperaments and are easily desensitized to things.

What country are you in? Different breeds are common in different countries.

In the United States (where I live), the most common breeds are all pretty good choices for beginners. They are common partly because they do well for so many people.

Keep in mind that a lot of the "beginner" and "friendly" birds will always have outliers that can prove the breed wrong. Put your faith more in socialization than anything else. If you handle your chicks frequently and earn their trust then they're buds for life!

With that said: avoid flighty breeds like Leghorns or Andalusians, and go for fat/fluffy breeds like Orpington, Barred Rock, Australorp or Wyandotte. All good layers and typically sweet.

I am in Utah

I honestly would do polish especially since I can never find any hatching eggs and I think they are very sweet and funny birds.
