BEGINNER CHICKENS AND COOP FOR EXTREME NE WEATHER

Try to get at least 5 or 6 chickens if you want a lot of eggs - remember they will stop laying in the winter which gives their body a break and lets their bodies work to keep warm. Polish chickens are very friendly - we have 3 of the white crested blue polish. Still not sure what the other chicks we got are since I ordered an assortment of rare egg layers and some brown egg layers. I know of a great hatchery if you need a recommendation. We have a 5 yr old daughter and she just gets the biggest kick out of watching these little peepers!

Hello, I live in Central MA and I have our neighbor building us a coop as we speak. What part of NE do you live? We just got our chicks yesterday and they are in our garage in a brooder. We are having a coop built like the picture below. He is doing a 10 foot run instead of this smaller one - price after looking around at pre-fab ones was reasonable since this one is going to be a lot sturdier for NE weather. If you would like his company name and info please let me know. That is if you are not too far from MA.

Hey @Fancypants1 I'm from CT, so I wonder if he would ship? Sure I could take his contact info. what is the size of the coop (how many chickens will it hold)? what did this run you, if you don't mind me asking?

One thing to remember about the prebuilt coops is - in actual experience they only hold about half as many chickens as they say. Overcrowded chickens end up fighting, feather pulling and sometimes cannibalism. Also they are not generally rugged enough for extreme weather.

They should have at min. 4 sg.feet per bird inside the coop and 10 sq.feet per bird in the enclosed run. Nest boxes don't count as extra space.

Hello Trish, I just stopped by to see how our coop was coming along and it is amazing. It is much nicer and bigger than I expected I can actually stand up in it it's so big. It can hold our 7chicks with plenty of room for the food and water in the winter if we get hit with a ton of snow. He added 4 nesting boxes which are two on top of each other and two perches. It has a real wind and screen that can be opened in the summer. His name is Angelo and his company is AV Woodworking out of Warren, Ma his e-mail is [email protected]

Not sure if he would ship but he might be able to get it down to you somehow and assemble the run onside for you.

Give him a quick e-mail and see what he says. My name is Jen, he will know how I am LOL. Have a great night - if you are serious about this spend the money for a well made coop now in stead of buying another a few years down the line. This one we are getting is built to last and will be standing for many many years to come!

I did a lot of research like you and everything I read about the ones you can buy online just was not up to good standards. They just seemed too small or to flimsy to with stand our crazy weather up here.

Have a great night!
