Hi, I am pre beginner! I have a coop/run, period the end. I want to get ready for chickens, the run is built for the deep litter method, I've been reading about what to add and about stirring it so it stays dry. I don't understand....the run is outside in the weather. Also, I've read to use pine shavings, we had a pine tree cut down and chipped, can I use the chips? Do I put the water and food anywhere, like under the coop.
I have snooped around on this site, so much awesome information! Thanks for letting me join.

! Pleased you joined our community! Glad you are ready to embark on your poultry adventure!
Here's a link to the deep litter method - I think it is primarily a coop treatment rather than in the run.

And yes, I think your chipped pine tree would be fine but try and make sure the chips are dry and not wet and molding. Might not hurt them if they were but I wouldn't want to risk it.
I like to keep the food and water out in the run - not in the coop - it gets too messy in there in my opinion.
Anyway, I wish you well on your venture but feel free to ask any questions you have along the way!
Best wishes and thanks for joining BYC!!

Welcome to Backyard chickens Vicky, it's nice to meet you. I would suggest you visit the Learning Center above. It's a great place to start a chicken education.

Welcome!

I do use the deep litter method in the run but the run needs to be covered for it to work.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
