I also say Orpingtons, and also Easter Eggers. My Orpington was always broody, but my EEs never were. They're also friendly, and lay regularly.

Unless you want high-quality (in terms of breed standards) birds, you can order from a hatchery, too. Some have low minimum orders, and a wide variety of breeds. All of my chickens have been hatchery, except the one I hatched myself. They are varying degrees of friendly, but none run from me.

Hello Judy, and welcome to BYC! Glad you joined.

I would choose any large body bird that does not have a single comb. Single combs are at highest risk for frostbite. However your coop should also be designed with extremely high amounts of ventilation and draft free roost space to prevent frostbite in the first place. The only time my flock experienced frostbite was when it was -23F and it was the rooster that had the tips of his comb frostbit. Everybody else was fine.
