Hello there chicken people!
Chicken person here, new to BYC and new to raising chickens SOLO. I've always been a big animal lover favoring felines and unusual pets, and poured much of that passion into my illustrative career with creature design. Naturally, I love dinosaurs. I fell immediately in love with chickens when I was introduced to them (don't talk to me about ducks tho 🤮). I found myself particularly drawn to game birds given their likeness to their ancient beastly ancestors, but honestly who of the feminine variety can resist a silkie? Love 'em!!

Fastforward to now, where I took what I learned and began my own little backyard flock! I grabbed 4 rescues from TSC (let's be honest), and ordered a bunch of eggs through trusted sellers on eBay. After some difficulty and a hurricane during incubation (I live in WNC and suffered from hurricane Helene), I now have 9 precious feather babies whom I would protect with my life! In fact, 2 of these little buggers hatched during the hurricane; maybe I'll tell the story some time. The pair are my best birds - a white zombie hen, and an ayam cemani rooster, and were the only 2 survivors of the 4 eggs left to hatch during the storm.

I'm a HUUUUGE rooster advocate, ever fighting for more appreciation and compassion for roosters, and I dream to have a rooster rescue some day that focuses on fighting bird rehabilitation. I know what fighter farms look like, and I DO report them regularly!!! I'd love to help anyone else interested in identifying and reporting these blood mongers in the US.

Lastly, I don't have a whole lot of money so everything I do for my chickens is on a fairly tight budget. I love coming to this site to look for affordable tips and ideas for my birds. I've also gotten a ton of information about managing illnesses and injuries here too, so I finally took the plunge and joined. I'm grateful to be here, and looking forward to making some feather-loving friends!

Enjoy a few of my favorite recent shots - btw I named the first bird that hatched during the hurricane Helene, which ended up being my white zombie hen who asserted herself as top hen. She's incredibly intelligent and super sweet, but a force to be reckoned with! She has a very amusing sibling relationship with her brother, the non-standard ayam cemani roo who is completely imprinted on me (and has thus far not shown any signs of special excitement, phew!)

Me (I don't dislike them, they just aren't what I'm looking for in a chicken. Easter eggers on the other hand are a different story), but welcome to byc!
Hah! Fair enough, I do love me some easter eggers too! Silkies make excellent broody hens tho, would've loved to had an adult around when I lost power during the storm. :< Alas, I ended up with 2 VERY special and imprinted chickens anyway.

Thank you for the welcome!

Hello and welcome to BYC!! :frow

Very nice introduction! Your birds are adorable, ❤️ thanks for sharing! Love your Cemani, I have always wanted an all black bird!! ❤️ Enjoy all your poultry adventures. 😊

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!
Thank you, thank you!!
Oh I love my little Ghost to the ends of the earth, he's so sweet and cuddly. I definitely have to keep an eye on him in the mountains here, he's not too happy about all these cold snaps, nor the snow. He's non-standard tho, a bit of white speckling across his wings and chest, but I'm hardly a stickler for all that.

Thank you for another very warm welcome! Looking forward to pecking around, heh~
