I've been to a pentecostal church and I find they sing to many new songs and almost none of the old hymns. The new songs are SOO hard to sing compared to the old 17/1800s songs.
Did have to laugh at this, apparently your hymnal isn’t written in five flats! I totally agree rhythm wise that older music is much more regular, but as someone who chords the bass cleft and plays the treble cleft by ear, some of the newer stuff is way easier to play, which is probably more a commentary on my musical abilities than anything else! Personally sacred music needs to be theologically sound, quality music, and congregationally friendly (this is a worship service not a concert) to make it into our rotation, I don’t care when it was written. We have O Come O Come Emmanuel (circa 1100?) right alongside stuff from 2023.
As far as as Mary being sinless (catholic teaching?), there is absolutely nothing in scripture to support this. Paul writes “for all have sinned” which means everybody, if she’s human she needs a savior, only the Word made flesh, Immanuel, God with us managed that. The song Mary Did you Know does a great job with this idea, “this child you delivered will soon deliver you.” There’s also a couple scenes in the gospels where she shows she’s very human, whether it is nagging Jesus about turning water into wine, trying to drag Him out of someone’s house because she thinks He’s gone crazy, or chewing out her 12 year old for staying behind in Jerusalem. She’s as human as the rest of us, not some Demi goddess, there is only one Name under Heaven by which we can be saved, including His mom!
As far as Pentecostals and the Trinity, I think Church of God is the major Pentecostal non-Trinitarian denomination in the US, may be some smaller denominations or independent churches too, but most evangelical churches, whether Pentecostal or not, believe in the Trinity. Dorothy Sayers book Mind of the Maker is a fascinating explanation of this mind blowing concept, you can find it free online. As far as women in ministry, clothes appropriate for church, etc, these are secondary or even tertiary issues that vary by denomination and even by church, but people fight over them like they are vital theology, just like we want to know all about Nephilim or End Times but don’t give a fig about the basic gospel message and how we should actually live as believers. There’s a reason this stuff isn’t covered extensively in scripture, we should take the hint and focus on the truly important things, not what color Noah painted his boat, save that for a PhD thesis!
Nice idea for a thread, a place where you can discuss nerdy theology stuff and ask questions without making non-geeks awkward.
