Bella's moody

Oh poor baby!!! I hope she will be ok, internal injuries are possible. I put whatever (like Veterycin) you have for wounds on that scrape amd I wouldn’t pull quills unless they are bleeding through the feather shaft.
Ok. No, not bleeding through the shafts, just serious road rash is what it looks like. Once I lifted the wings I could see it was a much larger area, pretty much everywhere on her back under the wings. I didn't pull anything but she was less docile when I removed the feathers stuck to it in order to clean her up. Stuck to it as in feathers were already out and sticking to wound. Got the veterycin on and let her go back to coop. She went back to the same corner shelf staring at herself in mirror. No bleeding elsewhere, moving wings and legs just fine. BM had no blood in it.
I seriously kept nodding off then would open my eyes to see she had turned her head and was staring straight at me as if trying to figure out why I was being nice or if it was a trick. A trick, ofcourse- proven when I finally did tx. Before, we just sat here for abt an hr.
1ST aid says to apply dressing to keep flies off but I think we'll try that next time- won't be easy.
Accidents happen and it's a risk when we let them free rage. However, I was already walking to the door bc F150 was loud & windows were open. He accelerated, didn't brake. He stopped about 50' on down the road and started to back up, then stopped and sat there til he saw me walking out then hit the gas & took off. Poor baby. Yes, they're dumb, but geesh, be smarter than a guinea. Mb we shld put out signs saying that?🤷‍♀️

Yeah, we’ve had our share of road accidents. I became suspicious that someone in a truck was purposefully hitting our guineas lay year. I really dislike living next to this fast road by my house. My dog was hit a few weeks ago when she ran through a screen door and escaped. TG she is ok but she was so lucky that the driver slowed down.

if Bella is scraped up, she probably has bruising and trauma that you can’t see. Best to do what you can to keep her calm. Fly strike can be lethal, so you don’t want her to have exposed flesh that a fly will land in. It’s controversial, but I use blue kote on those kinds of wounds if they aren’t too deep. It keeps other poultry from pecking at the wound and I think it discourages flies. I have a duck that lost a ton of skin recently (snapping turtle?) and I’m keeping her skinned wound covered (too severe for blue kote) and applying horse fly spray (permethrin based) to the feathers around the wound to discourage flies.

When I went out and checked on her earlier she was out in the run eating so I round up some herbs for her. Went out just now and the herbs are all gone and she was on the roost, hissing at me, so - normal. Lol. I rinsed her off w/normal saline and more vetericyn. Restraining and dressing her on my own wasn't going well. Asked Himself for help & ended up w/a stressed bird and a defunct dressing laying in my lap,so she's in a crate next to the brooder for the night. I know she has no connection to them, but it distracted, seemed to calm her. I darkened the room & all is quiet now. There wasn't any drainage or seeping; as long as it stays that way & doesn't cause dehydration, I think she'll be ok. The feathers seem to have provided enough protection that it looks like road rash w/superficial partial thickness loss. No blisters, but I'd be surprised if she isn't bruised in the morning.
So fly strike - understand the concept, but how long is it an issue? While the wound is moist, after it's scabbed, as long as there aren't feathers...?

That’s great that Bella felt well enough to eat and act more like herself!!! I think that an open wound that is moist is most susceptible to fly strike. So, by the time Bella’s skin forms a crusty scab or has new skin appearing, the main danger should be past.

Lady Bella in the hospital; reaction to being next to the nursey uncertain. She actually stood and stretched, giving perfect shot of beneath the wings, but my snap was too slow. You can still see after removing unattached feathers and cleaning that it's bigger than original pic. 20210711_002620.jpg Looked up Vetricyn ingredients - this shld be quite effective.

Have figured out how to dress her wound so she can be w/her mates. Trying to wrap tape on my own while holding her was a no go. -Are chickens really THAT docile?! Thought abt ordering a saddle then remembered: I had to keep Puppy in diapers during HW tx bc steroids did a number on his bladder. To use disposable wld be an expensive method so I got reusables for males. 20210711_200202.jpg worked perfectly for protecting her back and she can now rest in familiarity of coop.

Great idea! I use those for my 16 yr old chihuahua mix who has now forgotten he was ever potty trained… As for docile wrapping, not our duck who has to be wrapped in a towel before I can get her bandage changed!

:lau:bow:eek::thBella wld kil me. Lol after I finished she went below the poop deck and stared at me indignantly. She'll have a hard time getting it off, though. That's some strong velcro.
Something I'm going to try- little tree vanilla car air fresheners. I'll have to dig out the link, but said to repel flies. Buggins and all such buffalo gnat repellents use vanilla, and buffalo gnats are black flies, so worth a shot. That or spray with Buggins.

Let us know if these work! I’m not declaring success with my sick yet but I’m hopeful. The other ducks are currently swimming in the little frog pond while DD is locked up and quacking up a storm at being left out!

Wasn't exactly the plan, but after her tx, I returned Bella (top) to the coop via the front door and she walked out the back one.🤦‍♀️
Dressings/diaper were a bust, she was able to get out of everything.Been doing tx x3 daily, wound is clean & dry. I think Vetericyn leaves a light brown coating, kind of like New Skin, bc it's too smooth and uniform to be a scab. No drainage, no redness, didn't slow her down a bit today. She just looks a little worse for wear. I swear she thinks I'm the one who did this to her. Sigh, and she had almost come out of her hateful self.
