Quote:
Whispering Winds, I to have Shih-Tzu's and my male had the same problem that you are describing. I changed the shampoo that I bathed him in and started using Baby Shampoo just the store brand I get mine from Dollar General and I get the I think lavender scent its purple (he smells really good after a bath)

and also gave him 1 Benadryl per day and after a few days he completely stopped scratching. He no longer has to have the Benadryl daily very rarely actually but I only use the baby shampoo and he and my little female are both doing great no more torment from itching.

My shih-tzu gets benadryl and Selsum Blue too. Our vet swears by SB in the blue bottle with red lid. Made a huge difference in our pack of 5 dogs!

Tipsy.. I am a poodle breeder myself.. and as I don't have dogs with allergies.. I did have a standard with seasonal allergies and have talked with others that had food allergies..

You can give you mini a 1/2 tablet.
Also.. what are you feeding.. food allergies can come on at any age and be very slow to develop.. Hence find a food like Dick van Pattens "natural balance" duck and potato formula.. its made for dogs with allergies.. and the dogs love it. if he/she is licking at their feet is is probably food color or corn. You can also put the dog on Nuvet tabs. they are a great supplement and anti-oxident.. you can read more about it on my site.. www.piperspoodles.com
If you have any questions.. feel free to email me .. Kim

My GSP got into a nest of wasps one sunday morning...Her face swelled so terribly I thought she was going to suffocate...I called my vet. she said get OTC benadryl but make sure the only active ingredient in the pill was diphenhydramine...if you look at the labels there are other added ingredients in some of the brands...She said any other additive could be fatal to a dog...I found the right medication at Walgreens, there are alot of different ad-ons if you stop to read the labels...I gave her 2 50 mg tablets and in 5 minutes I could tell the swelling was going down....I'll never be without it again.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going out tomorrow to get the Benadryl and Selsun Blue shampoo. I washed him with a gentle puppy shampoo today and he's not itching as much, but it'll only last a day or two

I have to say, I'm so glad I read this!!! My lab/german shepard mix is allergic to fleas and they've been rediculous in the area lately. He's constantly being washed and treated. I think it's time for some benadryl.

I removed the grains from his diet. I feed my dogs human grade meat with Sojos, which has Rolled Oats, Rye Flakes, Barley Flakes, Ground Pecans, Natural Calcium Carbonate, Kelp, Carob Powder, Parsley, Basil, Alfalfa.

I took this dog off that diet and continued with meat. He stopped "burping" up his food all day, but the itching is continuing. At this point, I just want to relieve some of this suffering and hope that winter brings him relief.

I do agree with you however, that many dogs are being feed too many filler grains and it is causing many of the problems we see in dogs today. I was thinking of raising quail as a fresh food source, but my dogs are old and set in their ways so maybe if I ever get a larger breed puppy I'll consider it.

Ok, you said that you removed all grains from his diet, and then went on to say that you are feeding him rolled oats, rye, and barley...those are grains. My dog was chewing his feet, and he now eats Venison & Potato kibble from Royal Canin...if your vet doesn't already carry their products, they should be able to get it for you...solved ALL my dogs problems, but it sounds like your dog's allergies are bad enough that it would be worth it to take him in for allergy testing with a vet dermatologist...better than tearing your hair out with all these hit or miss things...

As far as the Benedryl goes, the dosage is 1mg per pound of body weight for dogs.

With shampoo, it is usually best to use a mild puppy shampoo versus a human shampoo of any kind, or a shampoo specifically for dogs with allergies, from your VET, NOT over the counter.

Good luck!

If your dog is allergic to fleas, only getting rid of the fleas with solve the problem...using something like Frontline, and using it probably more frequently than once a month if the fleas are really bad is probably in order.

We've been getting rid of them. He doesn't have them on him really. He picks them up as soon as he goes outside and they bite him before the flea stuff kills them, so he still gets the reaction. Apparently my area is a prime target for fleas because of lots of rain and gravel. It's just hard because one little bite and he tries to itch himself raw.

Tipsy dog, good luck!
