Benefits to a Roo?

If he is mounting the hens..then you have a cockerel. He may not start crowing for a while.....they are considered cockerels until they are 1 year old...

im not so sure... I read somewhere on here that somebody had a hen that mounted other hens!

That is definitely a young rooster (cockerel)....

What breed(s) do you have? Especially in reguards to possible male.

If new rooster to be added, then I recommend a full adult that is more than a year old. In my experience such males do not need to prove themselves in respect to rank with hens and they are also more dignified in thier approach to younger birds.

OK, I think this might be the right thread to post my concerns.

I have 4 chickens. When I got them, (back in mid-June), the farmer said they were 4-5 months old (which is approx. 16-20 weeks, right?). I think I have 2 Aracauna hens, 1 big RIR (based on pics I've seen of others) and 1, well, I'm not sure what to call it. It has brown/orange/black feathers. I can't post pics yet, not enough posts. (Working on that).
No eggs yet, but this horrendous heat we are having in Southeast Texas is CRAZY, so not too worried about that.

I know I have one Roo for sure. He's started to crow in the mornings when I come to let them out. I call his name - "Fred" and he'll crow. I crow with him to encourage him.

I also have another big fluffy orange-reddish chicken (RIR ?) that sort of "competes" with Fred. Name is Zsu-Zsu. This one seems to be the leader of the pack. He/she was here before Fred came and will try to push around Fred and will get to a higher roost than Fred to show him who's boss. Zsu-Zsu has not crowed yet, to my knowledge. Zsu-Zsu makes sure everyone is in the coop at night before he/she goes in. Both Fred and Zsu-Zsu have beautiful combs and wattles and will "spar" and ruffle their neck feathers, like Roo's supposedly do.

Since I have no eggs yet, should I sepearate them from the other 2? I noticed this morning Fred was chasing around my little hen "Red". I don't know if he was trying to mount her.
I'm so confused about what breeds I even have !!! Can't wait to post pics and get others opinion. I've shown pics to friends and get mixed reviews.

i have 6 roos, 3 silkies(black, buff and partridge), 2 OEGB(red pyle and bb red) and a RIR, i couldnt be without them!!!!

so let me see if I understand you...besides wanting to know what you have, you want to know if you should separate the roo from the hens...?

BTW, you can start your own post...you don't need to add to someone elses....

Why? You can eat eggs once the rooster has 'mated' with a pullet....OR, yes they are competing, that is the pecking order...it has to be established, nobody will get hurt...not sure what you are asking, so I will check back and see if you posted this with an answer...again, you can start your own post also, I recommend that...
