Best Bait for Raccoons?

Pics
WOW...there are times but, that approach is not a justification for failure of us to manage our environment. After all we are considered the intelligent ones...aren't we?

I have always considered myself a failure when I must shoot and remove one of God's creatures because of trouble. Even though that consideration is the final one in the basket.
I manage my environment by reducing the number of predators, just like the predators manage their environment by reducing the number of prey. I, after all, am one of God's creatures. I am part of the cycle of life and I do not consider responsible predation as a failure or a sin.
Just my perspective and not a judgement on how anyone else manages their environment.

If the shoe fits...wear it.
Funny how you can discern so much about me from a simple picture of Troy Landry saying "Choot 'em".

Since you wish to go there.......inconsiderate.....I submit.:ya
I'm pretty sure you're the one who attacked my character but I have no hard feelings and my post was inconsiderate so I apologize. I just think there's better ways to present your viewpoint and make your case than by putting others down who might not agree with you. Maybe you didn't intend for it to come off that way but that's what I got out of it.

I posted that picture to comically show that I am not against the killing of predators. My intention was not to trigger anyone.

I've trapped and killed a coon and an opossum in the last 2 weeks. I used HONEYBUNS if anyone missed it, LOL.

I raise quail and have had security in mind from before I ordered my first egg. All my cage floors are 4ft off the ground and higher. They are fully enclosed with 1/2" wire with no gaps anywhere. Well I thought they were safe and I didn't have any issues for well over a year. Unfortunately one night a raccoon climbed the legs of the cage and was able to reach his hand through the 1/2"x1/2" wire and pulled my quails legs off. He killed 9 in 3 nights.

I killed him and another one and didn't have anymore issues up until I decided to take some time off from the quail. I just got fired back up and I have installed aluminum flashing on the legs of the cages to prevent the coons from climbing them. So far they have worked perfectly.

Quail are very nervous birds at night. They do not roost like chickens, they sleep on the ground or on the wire floors. They spook very easily and will flush up and can injure themselves. I do not want opossums and raccoons running around under my quail pens and trying to climb the legs at night. That kind of stress on the birds is enough for them to quit laying and possibly cause injury.

So I kill them and toss their bodies in the woods. Saw a couple buzzards last week enjoying a coon sandwich. So far I've only killed 2 opossums and 4 coons in almost 3 years of raising quail and it's been enough to give my birds a stress free environment.

Sorry for the derail as it was not intended. Perhaps we can get this thread back on track....

I was responding to the picture...not you...hello. It was not your picture I concluded.
Sorry such level of remorse is present.

I in no way berated anyone....or of such kind. You took that upon your self to do....from a guilt position ......I would conclude.
You must deal with that ...not me.

Predators should not be allowed to be able to get in that position. near the coops......exactly my initial point. A simple outer perimeter control arrangement would prevent such....forever.

My opinion has been made and I will not respond further on this point.

well that got kinda heated, (missed a few pages and just got caught up)

on topic, just to mention they do make coon lures and baits for trappers to use. fish oil sprayed around a trap can help the catch rate go up. not going to suggest it over marshmallows (which i seem to have no luck with) or cat food as it costs more but it is an option.

Who doesn't like a little drama every now and then....

I just baited my live trap with marshmallows today as I've ran out of honeybuns, lol. Haven't seen any coons or opossums on the trail cam since I killed the last ones but I'm going to give the marshmallows a try anyway and see how they do....

The absolute most best bait is sweet corn. I mentioned marshmallows but got to thinking that my all time bet luck was with sweet corn. Raccoons can’t resist it. And while I appreciate them I just do not allow them in my barn. Their and possum feces carry EPM and if you have ever seen a horse that was infected you would feel the same way. And they kill chickens as a pastime - not for food.
