Okay, so I'm loving the wood pellets (made for horse stalls) in my gosling brooder. I haven't totally changed the bedding in a week. I scoop out some wet and messy areas by the food station and fluff up the dry areas. Need to add new pellets in bare spots occasionally. I started pellets when the goslings were about 2 weeks old and haven't seen them try to eat them. Things are much drier and less stinky than the pine shavings.
When I went to TSC to get more pellets for my new duck brooder, the sales lady said I shouldn't use them because water fowl will eat them. They swell inside and explode the intestines. I told her I had heard only good reports and bought 4 bags.
I am covering the pellets with puppy pads for my ducklings' first few days as they learn where to get their food and water. Last night was their first night home and one died for no apparent reason. I'm not ready to blame the bedding. I'm thinking it was just weak due to traveling from CA. We lost one in the shipping box too.
