I'm newly addicted to chicks. We've lived on our farm for about 24 years, but only grow citrus and nuts. When I retired last year, my husband suggested we start raising a few chickens for eggs.

My EEs are now about 3 months old. A couple of the hens are particularly tame - they come when called, follow me around the garden and are happy to sit in my lap. Their very favorite treat - by far- are tomato hornworms. I used to find them for the hens, but now I just carry the hens through the tomato plants in my garden. You can tell when they spot a worm because they get SO excited.

Who would have dreamed that I'd actually look forward to more worms on my tomato plants? Yes, the chickens also pilfer a few of the low hanging tomatoes, but I'm happy to share. We had no idea how much enjoyment "the girls" would bring to us.

Another favorite treat are earwigs, but they've done such a great job eating them we barely have anymore. If only they'd get excited about eating the snails!

What's the favorite treat at your coop?

Mine are hornworm fans too. The kids pick them off and toss them to them. Slugs and crickets are gobbled up too.
