I'm wanting a few broody hen to hatch out some Welsummer Eggs. What would be a good breed to sit on 5-6 eggs at a time?

Nate

I know this is quite late to reply, but if you see this definitely try Australorp hens. Nearly all the ones I used to have went broody and I couldn't get them to stop. I was over run with baby chicks! They are dedicated setters and mothers.

I have a Buff Orpington that is decidedly broody after only laying for two months!

I have two useless silkies and three, one right after the other, salmon faverolles broodies. Mean things when they're broody, but that keeps the chicks safe. Great mamas.

I have 3 silkies and 4 BO and no broodies. Once I give up and want eggs I will probably have 7 broodies:lol:

old english games go broody but silkies are deficiently the best.

My favorite is Kraienkoppes. Old English Games and silkies are supposed to be good. None are guaranteed. Several breeds like Australorp aqnd Orps are broody fairly often but none of mine ever were. Henderson's breed chard tells which breeds are more likely to go broody.
