Best Breed for in INDOOR Chicken.........Advise Please. UPDATE

I belong the the yahoo group housechickens and you can probably find just about any breed, large or small that makes a great housechicken. However, not all individual chickens are happy in the house with primarily human companions--some really want to belong to a flock of birds. And others are much happier being catered to by their human slaves. Notable housechickens have included a buttercup, a buff rock, numerous silkies, araucana, serama, OEGB, New Hampshire, d'uccle, sultan. I'm sure I am forgetting some. Watch for a bird whose primary focus seems to be on YOU, not the rest of the flock.

Serama would be good they are small and sweet

You should get a serama! BluegrassSeramas raises the "squeaky" roos that don't make a lot of noise and they are the smallest chickens in the world! They are a bit pricey tho.....

We have had a Buff Orpington, Serama and d'Uccle as "house chickens" and all did wonderfully! One was a roo and we made sure to keep him in a dark room until we were up so as not to have early crowing! You may want to invest in the following items
Swiffer Wet Jet
Tons of paper towels
Large crate/kennel
Carpet/fabric cleaner
Chicken Diapers

Good luck, we have loved all of our house chickens!

I haven't figured out how to get ONE chicken. All the hatcheries have a minimum of at least 5, which I understand.......for safe shipping. All my girls are standard size layers. I only want one for inside....and the extra smaller chickens would probably get pecked to death out there.

What I really wanted was a silkie.......but I can't seem to find one.

So then I was looking at the Polish bc at least the other 4 could hold their own.

Check out your local craigslist.com listings on the "farm&garden" section. Someone always has chicks in my area. Usually the people don't care how many you buy.
I agree that OEGB are a good choice.
As for polish, they are very fritzy and I don't think they'd make good house chickens, but it totally depends on their personality.
