So last year I decided that I wanted to keep some chicken. I chose a variety. I have two groups. One group is about 4 weeks older than the other. Each group has a cockerel (didn't know they were at the time, was just luck they ended up in separate groups).Anyway I digress...
I have 3 silkies that I added 2 cuckoo Marans too. The Marans are only a few weeks younger. They're nearly a year now and have gotten on well until recently. I have my suspicions that 1 of the silkies is a cockerel (although doesn't look much different to the hens). The problem is my Maran is quite large and horny! The 3 hens just aren't enough for him and the poor silkies feathers are suffering from being overused, so to speak. I want to separate the silkies and have them as a group of three. That leaves the cockerel Maran and hen. I want to get him another 3/4 hens but was wondering what the best breed would be? He's very dominant and overprotective so would like a breed of hen that can stick up for themself a bit!
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
