Best breeds for a good-tempered rooster?

I currently have a home bred Comet/Americauna cross that shows no signs of aggression but he is also very stand-offish, not at all friendly, but he has been good with the hens and the chicks.

I also don't mind if they aren't friendly, as long as they aren't aggressive, but think I'm just going to have to take a punt and see what happens!

A young chap has become available very close to where my partner lives and he sounds lovely, although he is a Columbine apparently, which I believe is a Cream Legbar-based hybrid? But he has fluffy cheeks like a Faverolle! 14 weeks old, hatched at home and was living with the ladies until a few days ago when he began fighting with their older roo and had to be separated. Proven himself to be calm with cats and children so far.

He also looks very handsome which I know I said (or at least thought) didn't matter, but it does help! Might send my other half to check him out tomorrow, although I appreciate his breeding doesn't sound in keeping with the advice I've had on this post!

My best rooster of all time was a silkie. His name was Puff Daddy. I absolutely would recommend a silkie rooster. 💝 He was gentle to people as well as gentle to the hens. He kept great watch for any potential danger and he maintained the peace among the hens. The rest of the flock were standard breed hens.

Go for it and see. He may turn out just right. But if not, be sure to have a plan on what to do with him. I would suggest keeping him away from your girls in a place where they can see each other but not touching for a couple of weeks. They need to get used to each other first.

Well, we have him and his name is Pingu (my partner went to check him out). He came from a loving family and is in excellent condition, very friendly and tame. He’s on the smaller side. Hopefully he will be a good match for us! Thanks to all of you for your input, a very interesting thread.

We culled our rooster Olaf last year after he became nasty with the hens. It grieved us as he was excellent with people, inc. children, and was a nice boy originally, although he accidentally injured some hens (before a pedicure) and then turned aggressive with the girls over time.

We've only had hens since then but I would love to add another rooster to the flock - we enjoy keeping a rooster and like the dimension they bring to the flock. We also have a very dominant hen who has started mounting the lowest ranking hen and causing some severe bald patches, plus there are major squabbles at bedtime. I feel that a rooster would help bring more cohesion as these issues were not present before. We have 14 hens and plenty of space.

Here in the UK there are lots in need of homes, all different shapes and sizes. My Mum is very anxious about it (although we have had many roosters in the past and they were all great!) and keeps saying "let's get a small one!". I would love to hear your opinions on what breeds you recommend for friendly roosters or which ones you'd avoid. I know you can never say for sure but I'm not really familiar with the traits of different breeds.

Thank you!
Believe it or not, but my Easter Egger boy is quite sweet with his girls and people 🥰

Best wishes to y'all & Mr.Pingu! He looks very expressive and I am glad you found a tame & friendly roo.

Just updating this thread to say that Pingu has been an absolutely great addition so far. He merged with the hens with no trouble at all and whilst he wasn’t always a true gentleman with them in the beginning, he was quite young and is really getting the hang of everything as he grows up. He is fantastic with people (inc children) and cats too. He likes our rescued ex-battery hens better than all the others and is usually with them.

Pingu’s arrival immediately stopped the bullying of our lowest ranking hen (who was being mounted by the dominant hen!) and he loves to break up arguments. When we reintroduced an injured hen back to the flock after months of separation, he immediately broke up fights and defended her until she settled in again.

If anyone is interested, here are some videos!
