Which hen is best for laying on eggs until they hatch. Here's what I got
1. 1 Rhode Island Red-two years, it has never laid on an egg. It provides then leaves
2. 3 Barred Plymouth Rocks-two years and they provide eggs but never laid on any
3. 1 Welsummer, same as above
4. 2 Ameraucana, EE-One is on the eggs that were left by another that are supposed to hatch soon. 1 is same as above
5. 1 silver phoenix- she is the only on that stuck with eggs the whole time. Unfortunately, when the two eggs hatched she abandoned the rest. Hence I dumped the EE in there and she did not have a choice.

I have wyandotte bantams and they are great brooders! often broody multiple times a year (2-3 times).

I first tried to stop them being broody by taking them of the nest several times a day, after 3 weeks shewas still broody. Only thing that worked was put them in dog crate for 2-3 days (but let them inside the coop to sleep at night). And they were not broody anymore.

Now they are broody and we placed little baby chicks under them which they are raising :)

I bought this brooder in 1997 ....

My favorite Brooder of all Momma Chicken

It really gets beat up with time but it works just fine for a G.Q.F. Incubator ...

Of all the different breeds I've got, our Australorps have run cirlces around the others in terms of brooding chicks. I have one Aust that is on her 2nd hatch this year.

We had a BR hatch some chicks, but she abandoned the chicks once they hatched. We also had a different Aust abandon her eggs at Day 16. None of our others have gone broody (Wyandotte, RIR, EE, Leghorn).

Game hens are said to be broody, but I've never had one (except some banties, which I re-homed).
