Best chicken breed for 6 year old

My grandson had frizzled cochins when he was that age, and they would follow him around and jump in his lap when he sat down. They are hardy and in my experience they are super friendly. His cochins were bantams but they come in standard size also.

Are they heat hardy

If heat is a concern, you might want to go with Black Australorps. They have the same calm and gentle temperaments as Orpingtons (not surprising since they were originally bred using Orpington stock), but are better layers (a Black Australorp holds the world's laying record for brown egg layers; 364 eggs in 365 days) and are incredibly heat hardy (consider the temperatures in the Australian outback where they are frequently raised). I raised Black Australorps in CA's northern Sacramento Valley where temperatures in the summer frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once) and with shade, good ventilation in their coop, and plenty of fresh water they did just fine. Furthermore Black Australorps are very cold hardy as well. I raised them in northern Kansas where the temperature reached 30 F below zero one winter, and with a dry, draft free coop, again they did just fine. And for your purposes, they're great with children. My children, and now my granddaughter who is 6 (quite a coincidence :o) ), made pets of them.

You're in Kentucky, so really neither your heat or cold are going to be an issue, you don't really have extremes of either like, say, Alaska or Arizona. So, you're good for pretty much any breed there.

For kids, good breeds are Cochins, Silkies, Brahmas, Orpingtons. Those breeds are all pretty maul-tolerant

But, all kids need to be pretty well supervised with chickens, especially young chicks.
