Best chicken breed for 6 year old

Quote: If he doesn't want black chickens, then I would go with Mountain Peeps suggestion of Buff Orpingtons. They are not quite as prolific at laying as Black Australorps, but they are still good layers, and they have all of the same friendly, calm, and gentle temperament qualities as the Australorps. As with the Australorps, my children, and now my granddaughter, made pets of our Buff Orpingtons. Whatever you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

They are gorgeous birds. Poor layers, but that may not matter if you're just wanting them for pets.

These are some of the most beautiful birds that I have ever seen! Oddly enough I have never had any, but I have never found any available in my area of Georgia. I should look harder because I have now made myself want some badly, and I am wayyyyy over 6 years old.

Donna Rae there where three inches of snow last winter at least where I live we get about 2inches of rain and got between 104 and 140 this summer

What I mean is your weather isn't that extreme for the majority of the country. You don't need to be especially concerned about heat tolerant or cold tolerant birds. Any chicken breed will thrive in your location, even silkies.
