Best Chicken Breeds?

Not sure if this is the right place for this post, so flame if you want. I am building my coop now and it is designed to hold 4 standard or 6 bantams. My main goal is to eat fresh eggs i.e. I want chickens that can produce. I also want to have a variety of girls.

What type of chickens would you recommend?

Cheers,
Brian

my favorites are my silkies(my rooster is soo nice that he will actually crawl into my lap and sit when i let them out for a little while)
and my little whit cochin bantams they are really nice.

i had a barred rock rooster that was a nice guy( was a mixed breed he hovered over all the other chickens in my fock)
a stray cat came over that was sucking eggs and when it tried to kill a hen that rooster plucked that cat till it had no fur around its tail and its neck. you would think it would have gave up by then.

I beleive this is an okay place to post the category is Breeds, Genetics, & Showing... so it fits....
Hmmmm, thanks for the ideas... Sadly it doesn't narrow my list

Yeah, I'm outa wack, The best layers on my farm are my Australorps, Prodution Hens, and Rhode Island Reds. I also beleive that there are some leghorn crosses that are supposed to lay better than leghorns. Oh, our Orpington layed very well too,

BO's are my favorite but I recently acquired some Wyandottes and they are quite friendly and beautiful, especially the roo.

As for the BO roos, they saved my chickens more than a few times by making so much noise when a coon came around that we heard it in the house. They are great watchdogs for the hens.
