Worms. We raise worms for our garden and are always at an excess of worms (even with a family of fishermen) and our chickens love them. PLUS we mix the worm castings with the chicken poop and our garden looks the best it has in a while. Just thought I would share

If you have lot of worms I really suggest raising them in bins. We had tons but now we have worms to spare, more animals to eat table scraps and worm castings for our yard and gardens. We have been trying to raise the majority of our own food, and we have had a much larger success since we started raising the wormies

How do you raise worms?? That sounds cool! I know my chickens would love them, it's funny to watch them get one and then they all chicken chase each other around the pen!

I know I love that! I have a large Rubbermaid tub about 1/4 full of dampened shredded paper with a couple handfuls of dirt thrown in. We just went to Walmart and bought 2 containers of fishing worms and through then in there along with some from the garden we have found. Every day we feed them kitchen scraps (minus meat and dairy), they love coffee grounds and eggshells. After 6 months or so we only feed them on one side of the bin for a few days, then we can get all the castings (worm poo) from the other side. and we fill that side back up with the wet paper shreds and dirt. Then harvest the other side. If we have a lot of worms (we always do, they multiply like CRAZY) we feed them to our chickens. And we put the casting in our gardens and flower beds. Just Google vermicomposting or diy worm farms. Its actually kinda fun

Oh, I am so going to do this! I do have a some worms in my backyard right now but I would like more and this just sounds perfect for feeding the chickens and my soil! My grandkids are coming this week and I think I will make it a project we start together! Thanks for the idea!

I do worms the lazy way. When I want to treat the girls I just turn over a couple shovels full of the dirt in their run and let them at the worms. The worms hide about an inch down so they are usually safe until the mean framer comes in with his shovel. We have more worms in the run than anywhere else in the garden. The girls also get to play in the compost bin (not the one with the eggshells and coffee grounds, so they get lots of crawlies there too.
