I recently lost my Speckled Sussex rooster.

I was very fond of him but he did get frostbite pretty badly each winter on his comb. Because of this I'm looking to find another rooster that will do well in cold weather, won't be as susceptible to frostbite, has a nice temperament, and of course has attractive coloring. Any suggestion?

I've had quite a few different breeds over 8 years of Minnesota winters. Although my coop is kept at 30+ degrees F. I can see a difference in how they respond to the weather.

So far all of my roosters are wusses when it comes to the cold.

I've had a tiny phoenix hen out all day in -0 temps and a brahma hen that refuses to go in no matter the temp, but the boys hate it. I suppose the best have been the EE's and the Orp and OrpX's.

Hope someone else has a better answer.

I love the look of a single comb, but am wondering if getting away from a breed with one would be best. I've been considering a Chantecler but don't have any experience with the breed. I also think they may be pretty difficult to find.
