How you raise chicks can make a difference. I'm sure the genetics have changed some since then, but when I was growing up, we always grew the Cornish cross broilers, and saved out a dozen or so of the best pullets. Put them on a little milder feed, and they went on to lay very well as a home flock. I wouldn't use them if I wanted to sell eggs. The dual-purpose breeads just don't put on much meat till they're too old to make nice, tender fryers.
