Best Duck to show in 4H?

Hey my kids are just joining 4H and i was wondering what was the best duck to enter in 4h and what won the most awards?

The little white call ducks are popular here. Another "big seller" was the Indian Runner ducks. Just DON'T order from a hatchery. I learned the hard way, we paid for "real" and got mutts.

Not everyone will agree of course but my son's mixed breed Indian runner/Khaki campbell won BEST OF SHOW!!!!!!!!!!! The judges loved him and didn't care he was mixed. Again this was for 4-H not an APA show.

No one breed wins here. It all depends on what the animal both for standard and for showmanship. It all goes down to the kid and how much they work with the ducks. The ones who win are the kids who put large amounts of time in with them. Go to a few fairs or shows and take a look around and then watch the Judge do a few classes you will see what is working in your area. Good luck!

my 15 year old is in 4-H, and when it comes to purchesing a animal for 4-H i always consualt with the Group leader to get there opps, that way your not bringing home the wrong critter and calling it a pet because of mistake.

not pekins they are always the most popular class i say anything medium or light i had awesome luck with my swedes and buffs id also say anything in the light class like runners and i wouldnt do a lot of bantams either another popular class for your first year do something you are more apt to win your first year to build confiedence!!! then a year or two down the line then do something a bit more challenging but if you decide to do bantams i would do mallard not calls!! that is what is popular here in central indiana and that is my take on the whole thing!!

We just got into 4H this year. There weren't a whole lot of ducks shown except for pekins. There was a bantam breed that won so that is the direction we are planning on going....silkies, east indies or minature appleyards.

Really to me, having grown up as a 4-H kid that always showed poultry, I think it is a mistake to purchase based on what you think may win. IMHO, *always* buy what you are going to most enjoy. Work with the birds that you have the most genuine interest in, not what you think has the highest likelihood of winning.

The fact of the matter is- it is impossible to know what is going to do well on any given day. Any breed has the potential to win. That said, in general, the older more established breeds/varieties generally are easier to find show quality stock in. It is really a crap shoot though. There are so many potential variables.

You might want to try to find a high-quality, rare breed in your area, so you don't have much, or ANY, competition.
