Best feeder to prevent waste??

We used pellets but it didn't seem like they like them as much but we have a bigger problem, We feed outside for the hens do not like staying inside to eat so we have probably a million doves and sparrows that scoff it all up on us so I think I need a scarecrow. Any suggestions?

Do chickens need food in the coop at night or is just having it out in the run during the day fine? I want to do the PVC feeders but am trying to figure out the best location.

I am trying to find a good feeder for about 15-20 chickens that won't waste too much. Since I am feeding organic this is super important for me. Any ideas from experience?

I have 4 chickens (7 wks old) and one in particular beaks food out of the feeder in the picture. I read on the Chicken-Chick website that one solution is to put chicken wire in the feeder, which I did yesterday. But now I'm not so sure they're eating out of the feeder. Should I remove the chicken wire or wait a few more days and see if they get used to it and begin using the feeder? I always scatter some in their run before I go to work, so they have something to peck/scratch for, but I'm wondering if they're only eating that if it's enough.

Does the opening go all the way to the floor inside. From the picture it looks like some feed would stay in the bottom or can the chickens get to it. I worry about feed just sitting in there. Thanks

I use this feeder, it's amazing! I call it the Elbow Feeder, 'cause I've never seen an actual name for it. It never wastes any feed, but it is a little low without a cinder block. I put in two 3" elbows and a 4" for breeds with large combs, like my little Brown Leghorn. Because it is on the ground, I keep a lid on top. The girls like to use it as a step stool when they are feeling lazy. It works very well with crumbles, but I would put the elbow higher up for layer pellets. For chicks, I never bought any 'real' feeders from the store... I just made some feeders out of water bottles. Here was their first one: (the sideways bottle is the waterer- at the time the best place for it was on the door. It is a nipple waterer. They also had a jar lid waterer with pebbles.)

Just a container with string.

Then when they got bigger, I cut off the top of a water bottle or a cream jug and stuck it in the side. They could eat all the feed out of the small one, but not the big one, so I put a rock in the large one to make it harder to tip over and easier to get to the last of the feed:

I use the bucket feeders with pvc elbows. Love them! You can use different types of buckets or totes and different sizes of elbows, just depends on how many you need to feed.


This is my newest. I use 4" street elbows. The only draw back is I can only fit one elbow in my bucket. The 5 gallon bucket holds 25lbs of feed.




These are my first buckets. I used 3" elbows and was able to fit 3 in a bucket.



I made feeders for my chicks using 1 1/2" & 2" elbows. Put them in a 2 gallon bucket.
