I'm looking into using DE for all of my animals (since the frontline deaths I'm cautious of flea killers) and I'm trying to find the best prices, it's that time of the year those nasty critters come out.
Any input is much appreciated!

Well, I don't know where you are located, but I get my DE from my local farmer's co-op. The last time I got it, they had to order it for me. I am thinking a 50 # bag cost $39.99. The last bag I got was last June, and I still have about 1/4 to 1/3 of the bag left. Use it very sparingly.

Your location will have a LOT to do with it. I get it from a local feedyard's feedmill, they sell perma-guard DE.

ETA: 25lbs was $27 and it's lasted me forever, I'd say 8-9 months. I don't use it ALL the time, though.

The deep litter method calls for food grade DE in the coop, not sure the difference so would this kind be more for runs and bedding too? and wouldnt using DE kill the bugs my chicks are supposed to be scrounging for?

I wouldn't worry about killing the bugs in the coop. There aren't going to be any edible ones after about half a day. Plus, most of the bugs you get in a coop, you want to kill anyway. Might be the same for your run if it isn't gigantic. The chickens will take care of any food type bugs in the run and coop. The DE will help with pests.

So would a perimeter dusting of DE be good for keeping fleas away from the pen? I plan on treating the outside with fire ant killer too just wondering how far away from fencing we should lay it.

I posted earlier and wanted to add that just two days ago I went ahead to pick up another bag of DE from my co-op and they have changed brands and now sell a 40 # bag for $24.99.
