we have 3 Australorp and 3 Plymouth Rock (aka Barred Rock). We get up to 6 eggs per day! They are all very friendly- come running & flying like crazy when we come out to play and feed them scraps.
noodleroo that is a cute picture. I have 3 buff orp pullets and 2 cockerals. The pullets are sweet but not laying yet. The cockerals are the longest legged things, omg, if they get out of thier pen which they always try to do, they run and jump and are impossible to catch lol. You would think with thier size, they'd be slower lol. They are related to jackrabbits.
I have a red sex link hen and she is the best layer I have next to our leghorn. She is real sweet too. I would have a hard time chosing between SS and red sex link. I would say get both and hide them lol. Grow lots of grape vines or banana plants around your chickens runs so no one can see what you have
I will have to check out delawares...everyone always has such nice things to say about them.
Awww that must suck. I would pick the one that you are really wanting so you won't have any regrets later then. It will be hard on the chick being alone and then being introduced into the flock by itself. Maybe you could find a point of lay hen? Your choices might be more limited as to what kind you can find though with an older pullet.
I have a friend with a small farm and an incubator. I would buy hatching eggs
and hope for some pullets to choose from, and then I would bring her home when she
was an older pullet.
I agree though, don't like the idea of her being the only youngster.
