Best "funky feathered" chicken for our flock? What's YOUR favorite??

Crevecours (sp)
My personal fav.
I LOVED crevecours when i was younger.
sadly they are considered rare, One of the oldest french breeds, but they have a real exotic green shine to their black feathers. almost like a mallards head. Very Pretty!
Will be an attention grabber for sure.
i think they lay a bluish black egg? would need to do more research on that tho. Im not sure sure about friendlyness but i have been told when their crest gets big enough, they cant even see you (so they dont run away) when you go to pick em up.
Other then that i HIGHLY suggest silkie breed. i used to have em as a kid and even as pullets and baby roos they would sit on my shoulder and coo as i did the farm chores. they were a Blast to have, they even went for walks with their harnesses. (pet quality ones are very IN-expensive (correction sorry, ) and dont make a differerance as long as you dont plan to show or anything) Great pets though, real dog like lol

They look like 80s rockstars! They're also patient, friendly, cuddly, and have a habit of falling asleep in the weirdest ways...

Buttercup is our BEST behaved bird (she even won the Cutest Pet contest at the local farmers' market, downtown Windsor). We bring her every week, and she lets me carry her for 3-4 hours, napping most of the time

Other people hold her, toddlers pull her feathers, buses/fire trucks go by.... nothing fazes her. She falls asleep in the tub, on my lap, in the car, in the sunshine, after eating... she's just fluffy, loveable, and SO tame

And whenever I call her name, she 'purrs' in response no matter where she is in the yard. She comes to the sound of my voice, and is wonderful with kids. Go for it!

Oh and the prob with the roosts and ladders, all my silkies adapted and either sleep on the ground in their lil "football huddle"
smile.png
or they sleep on a short ledge (can be like a foot or so off ground) 6 inches works best, they sleep how they want though. no stopping em,
I know alot of ppl say they really arent layers, but ive never had problems, and the info sites say they lay about 3 a week. (Not to bad for a small chicken) and the best part about em, is if you have incubator chicks, or an orphan, or ditched chick, Or are just looking for a broody chicken to hatch a batch for you, They are your chicken,( infact i have a young pullet who scooped up 7 bator chicks that QUICKLY out grew her lol you should see her sit on em
lau.gif
) ive been told even the roos will sit if they feel like it,
ive never had a problem with aggressive roos either, REAL mellow, like the draft horses of the chicken world lol
And they even come in any color! and i believe they have come out with a frizzle silkie? more research lol
hope i helped you even a little bit.
And i hope you find the best one for you and your family

Good Luck!!!

Hey there --

I love frizzled bantam cochins.

If you are truly in Franklin, I'm not terribly far from you. Just a bit over an hour, probably. And I've got frizzled cochins that need homes. Drop me a line if you're interested!

Your Napping Polish is SOO adorable LOL
are all like that? i was at the fair last year and there was about 3 of em that just didnt want me to clean their cages LOL they never saw me coming but as soon as that dust pan hit their cage they were all over! it was funny though, its like that wake up like "WHOA!! WHATS THAT!!"
def. wish i had more room for some of them too, my sis had two, but one died and the other is to sad to do anything.

Wow, we've got some great choices! Hadn't considered the frizzled variety - she might really like those but I have to say the bearded Polish is a hoot and a half! I'll research some of the other breeds as well. There's so many I've never even heard of! The crevecours are interesting, and the houdans are a riot - especially with the speckled feathers!
Yes, these are strictly pet chickens - we like decent egg laying but we are a family of 3 and we don't sell them (give a lot away to friends), so moderate production is fine. My EE girls usually produce 4-5 a week, and my GLW are daily layers. These new ones will be more for fun than anything else. Well, the chickens are mostly for fun anyway - cute pets that happen to produce food!
Interesting the different viewpoints on the silkies - they are adorable but I'm not sure it's the way to go. Our coop itself (where they sleep at night) isn't big enough to set up a separate sleeping area and if they huddle under the roost, they'll get pooped on all night. The roost has enough room for probably up to 8 but the rest of the space has the nesting boxes and the hatch for the ladder going down to the run.
AND I can't believe I'm considering more. I never thought I'd really like these guys - they were more for our daughter - but they have grown on me so much that I absolutely love having them.
Thanks to everyone for their input - would love to hear more!!
