Best gun for varmints

Excellent idea. I switched to paper targets (google is a wonderful thing!) yesterday morning some time, and had been shooting from the prone position to reposition, since I always shot better prone. But using a solid rest makes a lot more sense. I'm very rusty and not at all happy with the results of my prone shooting. I did okay, but it isn't a very practical method for lining up the scope.

Thanks for the advice. And I will try different brands of rounds. And types. These are Winchester high velocity LR hollow points, but I'm almost out already, though I started with two boxes of 100.

The .22 is good for everything you asked about except coyotes. If you happen to get close enough to one which is very hard. It does not have the power to make a humane kill. But most people never get a chance to even shoot at a coyote. They are smart, and elusive. They have great ears, eyes and noses. They can see a hunter wipe his nose from 1/4 mile away. But the .22 will take care of the rest. No need for a shotgun. Next purchase should be a .25-06. Great for coyotes and whitetail. Deer meat is healthy, low in fat and delicious. Its a good way to save money on groceries by putting extra meat in the freezer and also keeps the deer population down. Btw, Turtle shooting is a blast. I use a Marlin .17 HMR to keep the turtle population under control.

Also. Sighting in. The best targets are the kind with crosses on them. You can even use notebook or printer paper. Just make a cross using a ruler and Sharpee or marker. Line your crosshairs up till they are perfectly aligned with the cross on the paper and fire. Adjust until you hit right in the center of the cross. With the .22 you can do it at 50 yards. 100 if you plan on shooting that far.

It's a semi-automatic with a 10 round magazine. Something about a bolt action single shot appeals to the romantic side of me, but for critter killing I figured semi-automatic made more sense.

In case I miss the first time.

I didn't know you were a fellow "gun nut". We should get together and do some shooting.

Steve

Sounds good to me!
I used to work at the gun shop in Ayden (for 6 years)

I made the mistake of taking Ellen deer hunting, and have had to buy her a couple of rifles just so I could get mine back

This is one she got with her black powder rifle:

I got Sharon a Kimber 84M in .243 . It's the best gun in the house. lol

Would that be Guns Unlimted in Ayden? Haven't been there in years

I got a question.. Im a young teen (well..i guess you would say im in the middle of the teenage years). And have recently been thinking about getting a gun for predators, hunting etc.. I was thinking along the lines of a 22 since i've shot one before, but a person on here mentioned .22's being illegal for deer hunting.. So any suggestions?

That's fine with me. I'm a live and let live kinda guy. It's not like I'm going to hunt them or anything. As long as they stay away from my chicken yard, turkey pen, and ducks I'm fine with them. If they get close enough to get to any of those things, they are close enough for me to shoot.

Another great suggestion. Thanks! I'm hopping off to Google Images right now!

I am guessing you have no guns already.

If so I would get a 12 gauge. Here is why. You can hunt anything with it.

I didnt have alot of money when i bought my 1st gun. So I bought a remington 870.

Here is Pa we have Dicks sporting goods. and they had a mossberg with red dot scope and 2 barrels like turkey and water fowl and slug and waterfowl, combos for like $325, synthetic camo stock.

Just depends on what you can afford and what you plan to use it for. Rim fire .22's are not legal for deer. But a .223 or 22-250 would be legal. Also depends on how much you plan to hunt with it and how much it's going to be a varmit rifle. The .270 is great for deer hunting but a bit much overkill on varmits. The .25-06 is also good for deer and would do fine on large varmits but a bit much for small ones. There is no perfect rifle for everything from snakes and weasels up to 250lb Whitetails. So decide what you want first and get that rifle. Then add to your collection when you can. If it's coyotes and whitetail I'd get the .25-06.
