Thanks for posting this! I hatched chicks here all through the winter and all were healthy and grew great. I ordered 36 chicks from Ideal, they arrived April 22nd and I lost 20 of them. Within weeks, TSC had their chick days and I bought tons. I added them in with my Ideal chicks and lost almost half of the TSC chicks. I hatched out about 60 of my own chicks and some of them also got sick, even the ones that I kept in separate cages. I have been treating them all for cocci with Corid and couldn't understand how the chicks in the house were getting cocci. I never saw any nasal discharge, so I ruled out a respiratory thing. Although, now that I think about it, they did have labored breathing. They just all seemed very lethargic and just quickly faded away. I should have been treating them with an antibiotic instead

Luckily some of my favorites pulled through, but I am still sad over the loss of the rest. I am glad the mystery is solved though. I knew I wasn't doing anything different with the Spring chicks and could'nt figure out what was happening.

I did get some really cute Silkies in my shipment though...Reds, Grays, Self Blues. I lost all the Self Blues due to the illness and my Grays and 1 Red turned out to be healthy lively boys, but I still have an adorable high vaulted Red I am hoping is a girl.

Hate to kick someone when they are down but I had a problem with Ideal. I ordered some great birds from them...nothing wrong there and was satisified. 3 months latter they charged someone's order to my debit card ($700) and it took a lot of time and effort to get the order cancelled and my money back. It was being sent to my PO Box as well so it was not someone stealing my info to order birds. Attwoods gets their birds from Ideal just FYI.

Deb, maybe this is why most of our order died?!?! I also got a batch of silkie chicks later on from Ideal and sold them to another BYC member and they started dying with hardly any symptoms. I'll definitely have to message her about it.

If my Ideal order birds have it, then I'm assuming it spread to my whole flock! I'm scared now.

SunAngel, if you did have MG, the chicks that survived it are now possibly carriers. To confirm, you must go have a necropsy done on one. That is the only way to be for certain. Here's hoping you just had Cocci, it is everywhere and treatable. I am not sure how all of us don't have MG, it seems to be everywhere as well.

The Silkies I got from Ideal were just pet quality, they were white.

We also ordered from ideal.... many times before when we wanted different breeds. this year almost all the chicks we got from them died, they replaced them and nearly all those died as well. we simply just told them never mind. knew something was going on with them but never was informed of a problem.. THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION!!!!!!

I would swear the chicks from Ideal came with something. I still have 8 chicks that are slow to grow and most don't look well. My older chickens don't seem to have gotten anything though, all are happy and well. I just can't see Cocci spreading to almost every chick in the house and outside in brooders, all of which never touched the ground. Whatever came to my house in the Ideal shipment, killed almost a third to half of the 100+ chicks I got from TSC, hatched and ordered. Thankfully some of my favorites survived, but I lost all my lavendar and blue Silkies

I was really looking forward to this Spring and all the new babies, but after fighting to keep so many chicks alive and losing so many, I am about fed up. I am just ready for my survivors to grow up and look forward to hatching my own chicks next year. I will not order from Ideal again.
