Thanks for posting this! I hatched chicks here all through the winter and all were healthy and grew great. I ordered 36 chicks from Ideal, they arrived April 22nd and I lost 20 of them. Within weeks,
TSC had their chick days and I bought tons. I added them in with my Ideal chicks and lost almost half of the
TSC chicks. I hatched out about 60 of my own chicks and some of them also got sick, even the ones that I kept in separate cages. I have been treating them all for cocci with Corid and couldn't understand how the chicks in the house were getting cocci. I never saw any nasal discharge, so I ruled out a respiratory thing. Although, now that I think about it, they did have labored breathing. They just all seemed very lethargic and just quickly faded away. I should have been treating them with an antibiotic instead
Luckily some of my favorites pulled through, but I am still sad over the loss of the rest. I am glad the mystery is solved though. I knew I wasn't doing anything different with the Spring chicks and could'nt figure out what was happening.
I did get some really cute Silkies in my shipment though...Reds, Grays, Self Blues. I lost all the Self Blues due to the illness and my Grays and 1 Red turned out to be healthy lively boys, but I still have an adorable high vaulted Red I am hoping is a girl.
Deb, maybe this is why most of our order died?!?! I also got a batch of silkie chicks later on from Ideal and sold them to another BYC member and they started dying with hardly any symptoms. I'll definitely have to message her about it.
If my Ideal order birds have it, then I'm assuming it spread to my whole flock! I'm scared now.
