Best Hatchery for small order (5 or 6 chicks)?

I will be placing an order for 5 or 6 chicks or a couple different varieties and I wonder which hatchery is the best?
I've heard some of them charge an arm and a leg for shipping small orders?

Or would it be best to try to find someone local to split an order?

I would find someone to split an order. I looked on mypetchicken.com and their prices for shipping small orders are pretty high at least to get them all the way to me. I have heard that they do a really good job though.

I know mypetchicken.com for certain breeds it's as little as $2.50 a chicky. (Plus more if you want vaccinations, etc.)

When I decided to get some chickens I had the same probem....small order. Some of the sites are mentioned here. I wanted Heritage breed chicken and can only have a small # of chickens, no rooster as I live in town.I was worried about the shipping part, worried about getting roos etc. I could not find what I wanted thru feed stores or rom word of mouth. I finally googled farmers thru the CSA site and narrowed it down by state and livestck/chickens on their home page. I found a guy 45 min drive away that has heritage livestock and some brreds of chickens. Very reasonably priced (he charged 10% over his cost from a larger hatchery /breeder order and 50 cents a week for older chicks if you don't want them very young) I picked out my 5 chickens ages 5 and 3 weeks on site. He also offered to take any back that would turn out to be roos but he was pretty sure they were girls. It was nice to have that option to exchange a roo for a girl and knowing he would not end up in a frying pan but be kept with their flock. Maybe something like that would be an option for you.... Just my 2 cents....

Whats a CSA site?
Meyer Hatchery has a small order program and a nice selection of breeds. Nice catalog.
