Posting for a friend...... I have heard that Indian runners will outlay any chicken with eggs per year..... has anyone heard of this? And which are the most economical meat breeds. Also a question for myself, can fertile duck eggs (Calls) be flown to Australia? As our calls here are not nearly as small featured as the ones I have seen from the UK and USA...... does anyone know the weight of a good quality call? Any info would be great.

Campbells and runners are the best layers. Pekins are the most popular meat ducks, but I think Muscovies are better. They forage more and are not as greasy. I doubt that eggs can legally be shipped to Australia from here.

Edited to add I know nothing about calls but the Standard of Perfection says Calls should weigh:
Old Drake26 oz. Old Duck 20 oz.
Young drake 22 oz. Young duck 18 oz.

I am hoping my runners will be as good layers as I have been told they are. I have been raising my future breeding stock over the last few months...so am yet to see some eggs.

Pekin or Aylesbury would be the best I could suggest for meat birds. Both fast growing large birds. Althought I would never eat any of mine... So cant give any further info on weights, age to cull etc...

Eggs cannot be shipped into Australia due to quarantine laws.

Thanks for the info guys....... shame about the eggs tho.... oh well I suppose it is fun trying to breed smaller calls from what we have here, I do know of a couple of people who have the smallest Aussie calls, and they are not too far off the birds from overseas.
