What is the best duck to raise for meat purposes? I'm considering on getting ducks.

Here is some information from Holderread regarding the breeds they raise.

Eggs: If efficient egg production is your main goal, Anconas, Campbells, Harlequins, Hook Bills, Magpies and Runners should be given top priority.

Eggs & Meat: If you want ducks that combine good egg production and large meat birds of gourmet quality, we recommend Silver Appleyards and Saxonies. For high egg yields and excellent meat birds of medium size, Anconas, Harlequins and Magpies are hard to beat. Campbells, Hook Bills and Runners are lean, high-quality, medium-small meat birds when butchered in prime condition.

Pekins are also good of course for meat.

I ordered Anconas and Golden Welsh Harlequins. Some of them will go in the freezer.

I ordered some of McMurries ? jumbo pekins. They are due to be processed in the next couple ofweeks.. I will let you know how it turns out.

I have heard that the Muscovys are an excellent meat bird.
Not as greasy as other duck breeds and tastes more like a fine veal.

Yes it is VERY good ! My kids and hubby loved the Muscovy meat. I will be raising a few only problem is finding someone who can do the processing for me when they are ready.

We love Muscovy meat, to me it tastes like really good steak, we grill it after marinating it in some EVO, and spices.
We only breast ours out, that is where the most meat is.
Mrssmith,
It isn't hard to do if breasting out, you don't even have to gut it.
