A tree branch looks nice and natural but a 2x4 will do just fine. You can even use a large section of a log. They just like getting up off the floor, even though they can roost higher up once you figure out what you like to provide for them.

Make sure you do a Poop Board ... do a search on here you will see them... makes clean up a breeze !

I have a 4x4 post because that is what I had laying around. I was going to change it but just decided to leave it.
This pic is from when I first did the coop. The white is a shower curtain (on poop board and walls) that they ended up scratching to pieces so it is OUT. I also put a bit more wood around the edges so the 4x4 post is a bit higher and they don't sit in the PDZ.

That's to funny, my wife would kill me if I ever took a chicken into the house let alone house them in it.
You didn't grab the "black soap" while showering did you ?

When I got my first five I tried to house them in the brooder in the living room my wife told that wasn’t going to happen that the house was not a barn so I had to move them to the garage

I used a round dowel rod for my chickens although I only have one rooster that gets up there nobody else messes with no matter how my times I go out at night and put the on it
