Looking to get a pair of bantam hens to keep as pets. Narrowed down to either cochin, brahma, or silkie. Egg laying is not as important to us as quietness & tempermant.
- Which breed is the quietest hen?
- Which is the easiest to handle?
- Which is the best around kids?

Thanks!

Where are you in WA? I have silkies and will be selling some young birds that don't make the cut soon. Good for pets, layers, etc, but not for show.

I like all three breeds. Any hen is going to be vocal when laying. Silkies might be the easiest for a child to catch to pick up due to limited vision.

I haven't had brahmas so I can't say much about them, but I can tell you both silkies and cochins make fantastic pets.

I was keeping my silkie in my coop with everyone else, but she is so docile and sweet I decided to keep her in the garage with one of my older hens and a chick they're taking care of. I think silkies would be the first choice just because they're so darn mellow, but cochins are absolutely wonderful, too, and from the sound of it so are brahmas. I don't think you'll go wrong no matter what you choose of those three.

If raising from eggs, cochin's are so so super friendly! I've noticed a big difference in chicks' temperment. With that said, the adults I've gotten, the Brahmas were well handled, and so very trusting, calm and sweet. As far as noisy-ness, I'd say both are about the same. None of my girls are exceptionally vocal...I'd say Brahma may be a little more talkative, but nothing noisy.

Not sure if that helps....but I tried! LOL!

Good luck!

Well I have silkies and I am around them several hours every day and they just must not like me to much or something??? LOL!
Only a few of them will come up to me if I stand very still and they freak out when I try and pet them and they aren't to fond of
me picking them up. They aren't mean or anything, I guess they just don't like being touched?

Now my friend has cochins and they follow her around like little dogs. Go figure??
I had brahmas and they were really friendly, they would jump on my lap. I loved it!
