Best pet breeds?

I also agree this is a good idea. I lost 2 muscovy girls and i went to the shelter to try to adopt some but the shelter doesn't adopt them out. i searched forever to look for a place near me that does but i couldn't find anything. i ended up buying them from a lady who never paid attention to her birds. mine don't come near me at all but my drake loves them. also when i lost my first bunny i had a new one 5 days later because i couldn't live without a bunny. she died 3 days before my birthday and i got a bunny 2 days after my birthday and he is a lover boy! don't feel guilty. your pets would want you to be happy. they won't ever be replaced because they all have their own personalities but sometimes we just can't live without love from pets. i totally understand

and i would go with muscovies. i raised my baby boy from a week old and he loves me. such a sweet boy but you have to teach them manners

I don't know where to buy any muscovies that I can get at a day old except California Hatchery but they require a minimum shipment of 3 ducklings and I can only have 2..

Did you look on Craigslist?

With craigslist you may find someone close to you that has ducklings, more than likely you'll have to pick them up or meet them half way. I know some on here that have bought and sold off craigslist. It's good your parents would be going with you, it's not something I'd want to do alone. You never know who you might meet. But for the most part I think it's good. Get them to send to pics so you'll know they are on the up and up.
Have you looked on BYC "where am I where are you?" from your area of Cal? that may help you in locating someone to.

I also would say Muscovies, BUT.... Not sure if I would go with 2 drakes... 2 hens might be better. Drakes are more personable, Yes... but I have had drakes who had lived together their entire lives then all of the sudden start fighting with eachother ( Without females)....

Craigslist is great sometimes, you can find some people who are great but then there are others.... You just have to watch as some people are just trying to talk you into buying what they have for sale.

Good luck and Sorry for you loss

But I don't want eggs

and they need a special diet that I'm not sure my feed store has. I don't know.. is it just male muscovies that fight?

I buy and sell on craigslist. And about the hatchery... Do you know anyone close to you that wants ducks? Maybe they can shop together so you can get your boys.

I would also go with hens myself. I'm curious why it's drakes you want?

Hens dont need a special diet. My hens and drakes eat the same food. Hens just need oyster shell

Pekins are my vote!

Well I heard Drakes are nicer and I had two drakes and they were very nice and loved me and followed me even when they were 5 months old. I feel like girl ducks (girl animals in general) start to not care and will just do their own thing.
Also, Drakes are more quiet. I live close enough that I don't want my neighbors to get annoyed.

And I do have a friend who goes to a ranch and they only have one duck (Female) so maybe I could get her a friend?
