Best pet breeds?

Hi Kikidee.

Do you know if your county has a 4-H poultry club? (To find out, you would call your county Extension office, and ask to speak with the agent in charge of 4-H) If they do, you might consider contacting the leader and asking if anyone will be placing duck orders. You may find someone to split an order with to reach the minimum. (You might also consider joining a 4-H poultry club, to learn more about care, and to possibly show your animals at the county fair.)

Just about any breed of duck will make an awesome pet! It all depends on how you raise them (or how they were raised). I actually got my Runner Victor after Ming Mei's sibling passed away. I thought I might have gotten Victor too quickly, but I was instantly in love and 3 1/2 years later Vic still my spoiled baby!

If you decide to go with older ducks, finding ducks who used to live in close proximety to humans is your best bet. Otherwise I'd say start with hatchlings!

Have you thought about getting a couple of male call ducks. They are smaller and very cute. The males are much quieter than females. I don't have any but I think they would make adorable pets. You could hatch a couple eggs yourself. Or get males in craigslist easily.

I've only had runners and they are super sweet. They can be timid around others and sometimes will run from me if I have a hat on or a shirt on they don't like, lol... But they give me duckie hugs and cuddle. They always like being pet by me. It's all in how you raise them!

If you do decide to get ducks again, please feel free to PM and I can give you some pointers on raising them to be more poeple friendly. If you do decide to raise them to be more people friendly- be prepared, they will want your attention!

have you thought about the Bantam ducks? I am seriously leaning toward mini-Appleyards myself. But I am also considering Australian spotted. Then I think I might want a Campbell or a runner....
