LilyD, because humans and chickens process inert gases like nitrogen in the same way, i am personally of the mindset that the experiences can be compared. Humans breathing in nitrogen (well heightened levels...nitrogen is present in high percentages in the air we breath, one reason it is tolerated so well) and helium report simply falling asleep with none of the pain or confusion certain levels of CO2 would cause us. Gases like N2 should not be used for burrowing mammals such as rats and mice though, as thy can detect it. The science backs up the idea that stress and pain are not caused by properly administered N2 in poultry.
