I am looking into having some quail. But I have some questions.

1- How much square feet does a quail need?
2-What is the best breed for laying the most eggs?
3-Which ones have the best personality?
4-Does anyone have any photos of their quail housing?
5-Does anyone have any pictures of their quail?

Thank you!

I think coturnix is your breed... they mature quickly @ 8 weeks sometimes less, they are less flighty than most quail, lay a nice little egg, most of mine do daily, I have 8 in an 8x2 foot rabbit hutch and could probably put a couple more..

Check out Monarch23's sticky with info on coturnix, it should answer most if not all of your questions.

Here it is:

I have buttons, tiny tiny little things! i love them, i have seen them tamed, yet i haven't suceeded I am going to try again with my next batch. a bag of game feed last my 11 birds forever!! I used to just buy a few lb a week. of feed, you can keep them in a fish tank as long as it's clened about once every three days. a 10 gallon tank is good for a trio easily. next heres some pics:

Does anyone know a good way to persuade someone to let me get quail?

And a one more question..

1-Is it best for a first timer, to get chicks or hatching eggs? Or maybe adults?

!!

Buttons make good pets and their eggs are edible. Wouldn't waste the time to eat one because they are very small.

Jumbos are your best bet. They grow fast, start laying at 6 weeks and are a good processing size at 10 weeks. They are very calm, not flighty, and lay eggs like crazy.

I built this cage a few weeks ago and it houses 13 birds with room to spare. I have two of them:

Their eggs are excellent pickled:

And they are big for quail eggs:

Quail is also excellent no matter how you cook it:

Oh - and the poop is excellent fertilizer for the garden!!

i would certainly go with coturnix. i have had much better hatch rates with them than any other kind of bird! they are hardy, tame very well and lay very well.

my male, batman, is super tame. he likes being cuddled and held. i would certainly say you should go with coturnix.
