I just have the one cage with 3 Buttons... But when I moved in 5 Jumbos OMG the smell was awful and that was with daily cleaning too... Just too much for my lil apartment..

I have one redish quail that I call half and half she and her red brother (monark told me what to call them but I forget) Anyway she is very sweet and likes to be held and pet. Something none of my others like.

I have saved her and her brother from the dinner plate for a pet quail project. But she does not seem to lay, I am possitive she is a girl but no eggs and she is over 3 months old.

and here is her mate both are unusually friendly but they hatched from a pet quail that somene else had so I guess they have friendlier genes.

I think you can make any animal a pet, just requires constant effort and handling to build the bond. With that said some are more tame to begin with. So the question really is how much effort do you want to put into making a particular animal a pet?

I love my jumbo coturnix...they are friendly and sweet. I'm getting buttons too next week.

I think, though, that quail are like canaries...they are ornamental pets. They aren't like a dog or a hampster that you can hold and pet. But they are very entertaining to watch...I swear my blood pressure has gone down 10 points since getting my birds because it's so relaxing to sit and watch them play.

I would call my quail "functional pets"...I enjoy sitting and watching them when I have time, but I don't coddle them. I say "thanks for the eggs" and I have them in a big pen outside so that they can entertain themselves while I am at work. They were sold to me at 1 week old and I never tried to pet them or hold them long as they were skittish. I do enjoy whistling to them as they turn their heads to listen and then whistle back

I guess it just depends on your definition of "pet"...I work 45-55 hours a week plus commute time and with big projects and big deadlines I don't get much downtime to just hang out with my pets, but I love taking care of them.

Other than the babies, I don't think I would keep adult quail in the house. I had to keep them inside while I built their pen- and in the end there it was really a lot of upkeep to keep the smell from overtaking the house- and that was with 4 birds and daily bedding changes.

my 0.02 if you can keep them outdoors they are much more enjoyable

With minimal handling, the coturnix are hands-down the tamest of the quail breeds (IMHO). Buttons are cute, but not very friendly. Bobwhites are very flighty, and can be loud. Coturnix can be loud, too... don't plan on keeping them in the house unless you can close your bedroom door. Mine keeps crowing at 4am. I had a trio of A&Ms, and one hen would just sit quietly in my hand or on my shoulder... very sweet birds.

I raise them for meat/eggs, but every once in a while, one takes a shine to me and I have a new pet.

I LOVE MY BUTTONS!!! And have allot of fun watching them play, pop, walk, run around. Plus we love when they chat to each other between the cages. My vote is for buttons!!
