Best Raccoon/Opossum bait?

it also can help to "chum" them a bit with whatever kinds of bait you will be using. start scattering a bit of it out for them as a 'free buffet' a few nights before setting the trap...that will help reduce the suspicion of a 'new' food offerred in a stange new way (the trap). If they have already expienced enjoying that food safely, they will be less wary of seeking it in the trap.

I think I'll try one other thing.
A few months ago I used to keep a bag of black-oil sunflower seeds in a trashcan outside, The raccons were masters at tipping that on it's side and prying the lid off to get to the seeds.
I think I'll put some of them out there with the cat food.

We'll see if I catch anything by morning. It's getting close to time to set the trap.

Ya might try digging a hole or 2 under the trap to put the bait injust be sure to put one under the trigger and kina "blend "the bottom of the trap in with the ground the dog proofs work well just use polyfill or cotton balls instead of marshmallow it is more about eye appeal more then smell I use wet cat food that has fish in it or mackeral it is the strongest smelling of all the canned fish this helps a lot this time of the year

This morning, from my window, I could see the trap had been triggered, but couldn't see in it. I went outside and saw some fur... wrong color... I caught a feral cat and he was MAD! There is a local place that neuters these guys and gives them their shots, (trap, neuter, and release) but they aren't open today, so I released him.

Possums obviously are not picky about bait. Awakened in the middle of the night by a tremendous crash on my back porch...went out...two big plastic garbage cans, sitting stacked one on top of the other and filled with aluminum soda cans had been neatly tucked into a corner, are laying there with aluminum cans now scattered all over the back porch and the yard near it, and a good sized possum glimpsed sulking off into the darkness.....Empty aluminum cans, for goodness sakes!!!

Sweet baits for coon. For opossum my best results were with egg rolls and fried chicken wings. Of course those 2 will also get you some cats and coons. I lump all 3 into the same category!

Ive caught mine on peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches and on some cracked eggs that I couldn't use cause they were broken, but they seem to love the Jelly though The most.

Sardines, loaf bread with a little honey on it, cat food (wet and dry) honey buns, vienna weenies, crackers, smoked oysters, dog food (wet and dry)
Pretty much anything will do.

I don't use sardines or the liek much anymore because they start stinking after a few days if you have not caught anything.
