Best recession/depression chicken breed(s)?

Buff Orp Roo and Leghorn hen cross. Produces a little less flighty sexlink type birds. The roos are white and hens off white with orange neck stripes midsize. They lay more than my leghorns because those are crazy and quit laying whenever they get scared. These also go broody although I never let them hatch. They can fly (predators) and forage well. I wanted something like the leghorns but not so freaked out all the time and smaller than the average huge dual breed. I have 3 just for a test run to see what came of it. I like them.

I think there might be something coming up anyway. My parents went shopping the local stores for a new large television and nearly all had let their stock run out. Out of 25 types they had only 3 in stock. They didn't get what they wanted and had to take what was available.

Do all Leghorns act crazy or are there differences in the strains/colors? I was thinking of getting some brown leghorn chicks this spring. Also, can you tame them down?

I adore my dominiques. If the economy really tanks, I will get some ducks, too. I live on water, so they could forage and I love roast duck.

Late to the conversation here, but my Barred Rocks are excellent foragers. It's all they do all day. I think it depends on where/how you keep them, as well. Mine spend all day free-ranging on 12 acres, and we have warm weather here nearly all year, so there's no shortage of yummy bugs and green matter for them. If I lived in a suburb on a small lot with a lawn, I'd expect them to eat more feed.

My BR's also seem to be quite good at making more of themselves, which will help in a recession/depression - you wouldn't necessarily have to keep ordering hatchery chicks!
