My daughter recently trumped my naming skills...by far.... lol a back story too!
We had a mallard hen set eggs in March. Along with chasing free ranging hens away from her nest...which we thought we did pretty good at. Not so much.
On day 21, DH heard peeping from the duck nest. "Not possible," I said. Too early, right? 28 days for ducks etc.. BTW, this is in CO, in march. Talking still 0 out, during the day....
The next day, still peeping...can't find anything, no ducklings hatching... my daughter finally located where it was coming from; UNDER the duck hut 10' away from the nest, a lone CHICK. Not a duck, a chick. In the cold 10 degree straw pile.. got booted and the duck wanted NOTHING to do with it. Neither did a broody hen.
So we set up the brooder and bought a few chicks to keep him company... they hated him lol... so we got 2 Pekin ducklings. Love at first sight lol; that chick and those 2 ducks were inseparable! The chick would snuggle with them at night instead of roosting, watch from the sidelines while they swam etc.... "great we have a chicken duck with no name..."
Ducken the chickling? What do we call this little guy?
After a week of trying to name him, my daughter comes right out of the blue with "Chuckie", since he's a chicken duckie lol. DH was stumped that we couldn't put that together lol
She gets naming honors now haha
